Markham, Ontario

Markham Public Library built an in-house AI training team.

A fully remote Train-the-Trainer pilot gave MPL eight AI trainers. They went on to teach their colleagues and bring AI programming to Markham residents.

The challenge

As the City of Markham rolled out its Digital Literacy Strategy, MPL wanted to help residents navigate AI, but lacked in-house expertise and structured content to train staff.

Rather than rely on outside trainers long term, MPL wanted its own staff to become AI educators. As a pilot, the program also had to deliver impact on a tight budget.

What we did

ENGR ran four virtual consultation sessions, including a technology consultation with MPL’s internal teams and partners, to shape the program around MPL’s needs.

Training covered five hours of seminars and tutorials on AI foundations, practical tool use, privacy, legal risk and ethics, all delivered remotely.

How we measured it

Trainers completed assessments before and after the program. A final report gave MPL an AI readiness evaluation and recommended next steps.

The result

MPL now has eight trained AI trainers. In the eight months after the program, they delivered six peer training sessions for colleagues and two public AI programs for the community.
